Illustrating Cuba's Flora and Fauna

Antonio Parra

Only about 20 of these books were ever published. Of them, only six are known to still exist. The volume in the exhibition is the most impressive of those six, because it has the best coloring.

The pictures are all etchings, so they would originally have been “printed” in black-and-white. In this particular example, each drawing was colored by hand, by Parra’s nineteen-year old son. It is a true original! And definitely the “jewel” of the exhibition.
