quilt blockby Kate Wiswell

Machine piecing, photo heat transfer

Ms. Wiswell's central image, the soldier, comes from a photograph in Arva Moore Park's book Miami, the Magic City. Ms Wiswell's father served in World War I, and her three brothers and husband served in World War II. Seeing the picture, she writes, "I felt a poignancy there which called for further preservation and permanence." Using fabric she had on hand, Ms. Wiswell employed a traditional pattern around the borders. "My stash is full of patriotic prints and other Americana fabrics," says Ms. Wiswell, the only quilter to have two quilt blocks in Miami's Centennial Quilt.
