The Barefoot Mailman |
by Jule Ifshin
Hand and machine appliqué and machine embroidery Barefoot mailmen walked Florida's east coast from 1886 to 1893. "At least one barefoot mailman gave his life in the performance of his duty," she says. Ms. Ifshin is married to a former postal worker and comes by her affinity for the romantic barefoot mailman naturally. She arrived in Miami in 1946 at the age of 16 and remembers, "The bridges over the 79th Street Causeway were wooden, and the Seminoles in traditional costumes and hairstyles were always shopping in Lemon City. I loved the 'ice cream city' from the moment I saw the pastel houses." |
