Biographical Note

Architect. Specialized in Mission Revival and Mediterranean Revival styles, adapted to South Florida climate and building materials.

DeGarmo received a BA in Architecture from Cornell University, and joined the New York firm of John Russell Pope. Walter DeGarmo and his father, Charles DeGarmo, moved to Coconut Grove in 1903. Beginning soon thereafter, he designed a number of houses and buildings in Coconut Grove and Miami-Dade County. He was most active during the 1920s.

Scope and Contents

Elevations, renderings, plans, and details of houses, stores, churches, schools, office buildings, hotels, club houses, and apartments. Many of the drawings are notable for their draftsmanship. Structures represented in these drawings were built in Belle Isle, Coconut Grove, Coral Gables, Ft. Lauderdale, Homestead, Key Largo, Miami, Miami Beach, Miami Shores, and Star Island.

Arrangement

Arranged into series by place. Within each series, folders are arranged chronologically and by commission number. Most of the Miami Shores series is arranged by residence number. Undated drawings in the Miami series are arranged by building name or client; all apparently were made during the 1940s.
